The ceiling began to shake. Large pieces of tile fell from above. From the hole in the ceiling a group of silver robots came down. They did not have faces. They had needles where their hands should be. "The Vaccine " Patient Zero hissed. The robots did not move like people. They moved like spiders. They crawled across the walls and the ceiling. One of them dove at June. Its long needle was glowing with a blue light. "June duck!" Dante grabbed a heavy metal chair. Swung it. The chair hit the robots head.

They slammed into the frozen harbor, embedding themselves in the ice and the stone of the lower city. They hit the ground with the force of meteorites. Steam hissed from the impact craters. The pods opened. They were not human soldiers. They were not beast kin. They were tall, mechanical constructs made of brass and glass. Their chests glowed with a volatile, unstable orange light. They had four arms, each wielding a superheated plasma blade. "Automatons," Kaelen gasped, backing away from the edge. "My father's personal guard. They do not feel pain. They do not retreat. They are programmed with a single directive."

"Enemy patrol ahead. Clockwork Knights." At the end of the bridge, a squad of six robots marched in formation. They looked like medieval knights, but made of copper and clockwork, with glowing red eyes and swords for arms. "I got 'em!" Tank yelled. "LEEROY JENKINS!" He didn't wait for a plan. He charged forward, his golden armor shining like a beacon. His minigun spun up with a high-pitched whine. BRRRRRT. Blue laser fire erupted from his arm. The heavy rounds slammed into the Clockwork Knights.

Caleb said, "Daddy, I'm a really amazing smart robot. Uncle Linux said that his mother was the one who upgraded me, so you can't throw me out, alright?" Nathan stroked the robot's head as he zoned out while looking at the video... Who else is Linux' mother Connie? Why would Linux pass this camera footage to Caleb? What was he trying to say? The auto-trans stood in all his white and green glory. The three of them boarded and claimed the three seats at the back. “Thank you for using this auto-trans,” a robotic voice droned softly from the speakers.

Seizing the opportunity, Kai reached up, his hand glowing faintly with a blue aura. Maya recognized the telltale signs of a telekinetic surge. With a grunt of exertion, he ripped a metal panel from the bot's side, exposing its vulnerable circuitry.
