Several minutes later, I heard footsteps from a side path I hadn't realized was cut into the rock. The first demon to appear around the corner was a mass of corded muscles and skin, the deep blue gray color of a storm-racked sky, and easily seven feet tall, with a pair of leathery wings folded tight against his back, and a pair of curling ram-like horns sweeping back from his temples. His eyes were a startling amber, his gaze cool and calculating, as though he had just finished taking in the four of us and was considering his response.

Battle after battle there was clearly being watched by many powerful demons, but not a single one of them stepped in to help, even as people died right before their eyes. You two must die here!” said a massive demon with an entirely black body. This demon had blue eyes, unlike the others; such a difference in eye color was rare in the demon realm. Usually, it followed their parents’ eyes or a combination of both, creating a demon stronger than before.

Blue turned to her. “No. There are ceiling fans everywhere.” He even pointed them out. “What I mean is—you’re a demon, right?” Katleya teased. “Your face is the demon!” Blue shot back—earning glances from the quiet congregation.

The air was dry and hot, as though they had stepped into a furnace, and Maddie felt ash settle on her eyelids, blinding her vision momentarily. The warriors were letting out yells of terror and surprise: it was clear that none of them had ever seen demons like those before. They were throwing Celestial Blades and swinging swords, but nothing seemed to have any effect on the demons. Those creatures were moving swiftly and equally efficiently, their bodies of vapour passing through the bodies of the Hunters and killing quickly.
