As I walked out of the room, Amanda's desperate screams echoed behind me, but I never looked back. She was not sorry for what she had done. She was only afraid because she had lost everything.

Even from behind, he radiated a kind of predatory stillness that made the hair on my arms stand up. "Mr. Vane?" I whispered. He turned. His eyes were the first thing I noticed. Ocean blue, cold as a winter tide, and filled with a terrifyingly familiar intensity. He looked at me, and for a split second, I felt like a freshman again, standing in the library at St. Jude’s Academy, trembling under the gaze of the school's untouchable king. But that was impossible. Julian Vane had been a legend, a boy years ahead of me. He wouldn't remember a quiet girl from the back of the assembly hall.

I exclaimed, panic rising in my throat. This can’t be possible. This can’t be happening to me. Not today. Not on my first day. I was so lost in my thoughts that i got stuck in the elevator on my first day at work. What?! I started to cry, my emotions were all over the place, I couldn’t process it. Was my presence a jinx or was this God’s way of telling me that i shouldn’t take this job?

Yet Lise did open her eyes, she fisted her hands by her side still praying and hoping God would save her from this monster. “Open your eyes.” He snarled and practically spat on her face. The chill of his voice reached down into her cells as she was beginning to scum into the darkness. Her brain ceased to work and she wasn’t able to comprehend what he was actually saying. Her pulse ran wild on her neck, which didn’t go unnoticed by Andreas.

"But you told me not to come back after the operation." "It's because I want you to be present when the doctor removes the bandage from my eyes," he explained, smiling. "I want you to be the first person I see that day." "That will make your mother cry." "My mother would understand. She's the most understanding woman on the planet. Her eyes were teary for nth time because his empathetic gesture was like a drizzle of rain washing the sorrows that fatigued her body to the brink of wishing death. Something must have overtaken him causing the photo to slip his fingers. Thankfully, she was fast enough to catch their valuable keepsake! She turned about to spit fire at him for his carelessness but his obsidian pair of eyes paralyze her body. They bore pain so intense, it lures her into taking half of it to alleviate his suffering...

Mirabel turned around to face him with panic written all over her face. "Did you... You cried?" Troy asked with a squinted gaze as he noticed Mirabel's sullen eyes when she turned to face him. Stephen also turned to face her and he noticed her reddened eyes. "Me? cry? oh no no" Mirabel denied "Something got into my eyes" she lied.

The scream finally died in my throat, leaving the room ringing with sudden, heavy silence. He stared at me, mouth slightly open. Then his gaze locked on my eyes. “What’s wrong with your eyes?” he whispered, voice hoarse. I blinked hard, still breathing fast and shallow. The world looked different now. Sharper, colours seemed brighter, edges clearer than they had ever been. When I glanced at the small mirror hanging across the room, my reflection showed my eyes glowing with an unnatural silver light, the familiar gray completely replaced by something wild, luminous, and entirely new.

Grace spread her arms defensively. “Yes. She's not." Amaya spoke up too. I just stood behind them with a rigid heart. It was as if the cigar had wiped away my fear hormone. “Let me just follow her. I'll be back girls." I said with less concern, my voice deeper than usual. Grace turned to me, worries written all over her face.
