~065 The Awakening The storm broke over the Bluefield estate just after midnight. Thunder cracked above the slanted roofs like a warning shot. Rain lashed the windows, wind howled through the eaves, and deep in the manor's west wing, something shifted. Lyra's eyes fluttered open. The first thing she saw was a soft, amber glow and a flickering ceiling light. Then the second thing-everything else. Thoughts surged into her mind like a tidal wave.

I’d seen a fair amount of what awakenings looked like—tearing, a flash, the sound of howling, and a change of position from standing on two legs to standing on all fours. I hoped mine wouldn’t be as painful, and wished my wolf would be as captivating and exceptionally beautiful.
