Stood in the kitchen. She did not know if he was telling the truth. That was the honest assessment. She did not know. She had no specific evidence that he was not — no message found, no inconsistency in the account, nothing beyond the quality of the pauses and the particular texture of messages that she knew in her body but could not verify with her mind. She had been here before. In this exact place. The uncertainty. The reading of pauses. The body that knew things before the mind had evidence. The difference was that this time she was not going to swallow it.

THE EVIDENCE (Damien's POV) Eleanor was coming down the stairs. I could hear her footsteps getting closer. Panic surged through me. I was trapped down here. If she found me in this room, with the safe open, she would know what I was doing. I turned back to the safe, pulled the door open fully. Inside was a book, leather bound. I grabbed it, pulled it out. The cover had no title. Just the Blackwood family crest embossed in gold.

"That’s your excuse for defending a thief?" Charles ignored her, but Stanley shot Candy a sharp glare, silencing her. She huffed and stepped back into place. "Also," Charles continued, "I have evidence." Gasps echoed around the room. The maids exchanged nervous glances, whispering among themselves. I turned to Candy, whose face had gone pale. Beads of sweat glistened on her forehead. "You have evidence?" Stanley asked, his tone shifting slightly. Charles nodded. "I do." "Show me."
