Bjorn's words sent ice through my veins. "He found us? How?" The old man was already moving, grabbing a worn leather bag from beside the hearth and stuffing it with supplies. "The bond," he said grimly. "Ronan's bond to you. It's like a leash—he can feel you, sense you, especially when you're scared or hurt." I looked down at myself, at my bleeding feet, my torn dress, my trembling hands. I was scared. I was hurt. Of course he could feel me.

“One day the bond will drag you back.” My entire body went still. That sentence didn’t just land, it sank slowly and deeply like something locking into place inside me. Nathan continued anyway, unaware of the damage he was doing. “Maybe not tomorrow, maybe not next month but that's what bonds do eventually.” He added and just like that, everything else around me disappeared because what I heard wasn’t “bond.” What I actually heard in my head was Harlan. My throat tightened and my voice came out quieter than I intended.

“Nina, the one you saved, tried to resist arrest while the youngest cried, Abigail, isn’t it?” I couldn’t breathe. I felt something inside me shatter.
