I run my hand over it before propping it open. 'How to refine your magic: A Complete Guide'. "Hmmm…" I purse my lips together. Could this actually be the answer to all of my prayers? Gods, I hoped so. Closing the book, I flip the book over. Weirdly enough, there's no barcode on the back of it, nor on the inside cover when I flip it open again. Had someone left this here on accident? I tuck it close to my chest. Well, finder's keepers, right?

For a long moment Xander didn't speak like he was trying to take in what I just told him. His eyes studied me as he furrowed his brows in confusion. “What Book of Alphas?" "They didn't start out human?" "If by human, you mean like we are now, then no." He shook his head, moving closer to the book. "Appendix A," he said. The book quietly flipped toward the back, its pages stirring the air with the smell of old paper. When it stopped, I unconsciously recoiled from the pictures on the page, finding it difficult to grasp what I saw. "What are those things?" I finally asked. The creatures had dark and hairy bodies. Their arms and legs were the same lengths, similar in proportion to an ape.
