In a fantasy novel, though? That's where world-building gets real. A map is essential, but also a glossary for all those made-up terms I'll forget by chapter three. Genealogical charts can save a lot of flipping back, and a timeline of major historical events helps ground the story.

My absolute favorites are the ones that add flavor, not just function. Terry Pratchett included extra footnotes and jokes in some of his. A 'behind the scenes' bit about how the magic system works, written from an in-world perspective, feels like a gift. The appendix should feel like an extension of the book's voice, not a dry academic addendum. It's the difference between a textbook and a treasure map.

I'm wrestling with this on my own project, and my editor pointed out something helpful: the best format depends on whether people are skimming or studying. If it's a history book with primary documents, a clean scan of the original text, maybe with a transcript underneath, beats a summarized version. I crammed too much into one appendix once and readers just skipped it.

For my fantasy novel, fans loved a simple glossary of terms and a family tree at the back. The key is making it physically navigable—clear headings, maybe different paper if it's a print edition. Online, hyperlinks are your friend. An appendix shouldn't feel like required homework; it's bonus content for the curious.

I never used to pay much attention to appendices, honestly. I'd just finish the last chapter and close the book. I remember reading one fantasy novel where the main text had this cryptic reference to an old calendar system, and the appendix had the full breakdown. It made the world feel deeper and lived-in, like there was history beyond the page. I actually started looking forward to checking the back matter after finishing a book; it became part of the whole experience.
