Besides, Riley's better than you in every possible way." Before I could even register it, he bit me. Shock and fear rippled through me. 'What the hell? Has he completely lost it?' Kenneth wasn't even the same person anymore. His movements were wild, desperate. His lips crashed against mine, and then another bite, sharp and deliberate.

Jem holds it high above his head and even though he's the shortest of the guys, I can't reach. Snatching his arm, I try to pull it down toward me whilst trying to climb him like a tree. Jem's arm doesn't budge and I growl, frustrated with him. Clawing at his arm frantically I grow more and more irritated with how easily he can keep it from me. When that tactic doesn't work I sink my teeth into his bicep. Jem yelps, drops the book and moves away from me. Looking down at the imprint of my teeth in his skin he turns to the others. "She bit me." He sounds both awed, incredulous and slightly turned on.

Then another. My appetite disappeared completely. “You’re not eating,” Ollie said quietly. I looked up. He wasn’t eating either. Just watching me. I forced another bite. “Neither are you.” He raised an eyebrow. I sighed. “Fine. Not much.” “That’s different from not eating.” “Congratulations,” I muttered. “You discovered nuance.” He almost smiled. Almost. Anya leaned forward from the other couch. “So,” she said brightly, mouth full of pizza, “now that we’ve survived the semester, we can focus on important things.”

"Move!" Bima’s shout ripped through the alley as he shoved Lia and Riska forward, his eyes locked on the advancing figures in white. The notebook, his new, precious burden, was tucked tight against his chest. The eatery owner’s voice, amplified by some unseen device, boomed, "It's futile, Bima. The Palate is everywhere. It is you." But Bima felt a counter-current, a faint thrumming from the notebook, a ghost of that unique flavor. It was a whisper against the roaring phantom hunger.

Aaron’s pulse skipped. “Dog?” he muttered, laughing weakly at himself. “You’re just a dog. Go away.” He shook his head, muttering, shoving the thought down, dismissing it. Then came the first strike. Something heavy lunged from the shadows, jaws clamping down on his calf. Pain erupted, hot and shocking, teeth sinking deep. He screamed, stumbling backward, hands clawing at the fur, the weight, the bite. The taste of blood hit him instantly, coppery and sharp.

My whole body jerked once, twice, then went limp. Elizabeth withdrew the breadstick slowly. Brought it above the table. Looked me dead in the eye. And took a slow, deliberate bite. She chewed. Swallowed. Licked her lips. “Delicious,” she murmured, just loud enough for me to hear. Alex glanced up. “What?” “The breadsticks,” she said sweetly. “Mia, you really should try one. They’re unforgettable today.” I couldn’t speak. Couldn’t move. My clit still pulsed, my thighs slick, my mind blank except for one thought:

He rolled halfway toward me, his eyes glassy, like he held tears in them, "Why do I feel like this? Why does it hurt?" I could lie, and tell him it was just a side effect of the shift, but he deserved the truth. "I'm sorry, it's because of me, I bit you last night, I promise I didn't mean to... not like that. Elion pulled a book from the shelf. "Here," Elion said. "Read this." Cale looked at the cover. The Hobbit. "Fantasy," Cale said. "Illogical." "It's a journey," Elion said. "Read the first page." Cale opened the book. He read. "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit," Cale read aloud, his voice low. "Keep going." "Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell..."

I said, still a bit startled, "but where did that come from?" Adam gently rubbed his warm hands up and down my arms, a tender gesture that made the chill in the air fade slightly. "You were bitten," he replied, his voice low and soothing. I pulled back suddenly, my real annoyance flaring. "What?" "Let me finish," he said, taking a small step closer, his seriousness cutting through the tension. "The bite didn't break the skin... You got lucky." His gaze dropped, evading mine as if he were wrestling with the gravity of what he was saying.

How could he possibly still hold any feelings toward me? I slowly lowered my head and reached for the food on the ground, pitifully eating like a disgraced mutt. Suddenly, Emily's voice, underlined with malice, rang in my ears, "Why aren't you eating the meat, Marina? I'm sure you need the nutrition, right?" Numbly, I placed the meat into my mouth. My sense of taste had long since been dulled from all the pain I suffered, so all I could feel was that the meat was slightly different from anything I'd ever eaten before.
