Heat crept up my neck. "Boring," Chloe sang out, pouring herself more champagne. "Open it, Maya. Maybe he hid a check in there or something." I felt a strange prickly heat on the back of my neck. Silas hadn't moved. He was watching my hands with dark satisfaction. Like a hunter watching prey step into a trap. "Go on," he urged softly. "Open it." I opened the hardcover. My breath stopped. The pages had been hollowed out. The center of the thick book was cut away to form a hidden compartment, lined in black velvet.

After a minute, he seemed to think of one. He went over to one of the bookshelves and pulled down a large book. He carried it over and held it out to me so I could see. As I took it from him, I was a little surprised to see the words Advanced Astrophysics printed across the cover. I stared down at it, confused. "The best place to hide something is in plain sight," he said, reaching over and opening the book.

There is a silk velvet white sofa on the side, a rocking recliner chair on the side for comfort. I let my gaze fall back on the table as I let my fingers feel the ledgers. Then my eyes caught on a novel looking book. I picked it and to my surprise it was an explicit male p**nography book, vividly illustrated in each chapter. Just p**n without plot. “Fucking pervert!” I slammed it back on the table. I’m about to walk away to look at another place when my eyes caught a brown envelope under the opened manuscript. My gaze flickered curiously at why it was hidden under the manuscript he was reading. I pull it out, revealing a long brown envelope. It was bare with nothing written on the body.

I grabbed it, pulled it out. The cover had no title. Just the Blackwood family crest embossed in gold.

My eyes shone when I saw that it was the book of the devil. "What's your na---" I would have asked the beggar, but when I raised my head, I didn't see any other creatures in that alley.
