“I have it under control.” For the moment, they allowed me that luxury of thinking that. When Nora and Elias released me, I didn’t go to Nerezza. Instead, I retraced my steps, ducking into one of the older lecture rooms and down the servants’ stairway hidden behind plaster on the west wing. Most people didn’t remember it was there. Even fewer had clearance. I didn’t have clearance, either. Not technically. But my sigil key buzzed approvingly when I held it against the concealed plate hidden behind the torch bracket. Stone ground on stone, and the narrow door swung open into the cool blackness of the pre-Concord archive.

The click of the lock felt louder than usual. I stood there for a moment. Listening. Nothing. No footsteps. No movement. Just silence again. I turned slowly toward the bed. Then toward the drawer. The manuscript was still inside. Waiting. And now— After that conversation— I was even more certain about one thing. Damien was hiding something. Not obviously. Not carelessly. But deliberately. And whatever it was… Katherine had written it down. I walked back to the bed and sat down slowly. “…yeah.”

The cool, smooth surface feels reassuring, but my mind is already racing with scenarios. Who dares trespass on my private domain? She couldn't afford to waste time searching. "There's a bookshelf on the east wall," Connor said, his eyes meeting hers. "Third shelf from the top. Look for a copy of 'The Count of Monte Cristo.' It's an old edition, leather-bound, kind of falling apart. The stamp is hidden inside a hollowed-out section in the middle of the book." Kyla couldn't help the slight smirk that crossed her face. "Classic. Very dramatic." "I thought it was fitting," Connor replied, and for just a moment, there was a flash of the old him. The charming, slightly smug Connor she'd first met, before everything got complicated and messy and deadly.

This was something else. He tapped his fingers lightly against the glass of his untouched whiskey. "What are you not telling me, Devon?" He leaned back in his chair, staring again at the skyline. The city below looked too serene for what he sensed building. Then he stood. He walked to the bookshelf on the far side of the room, slid aside a leather-bound volume that didn’t match the others, and pressed the concealed button behind it. A small drawer slid out from the paneling, revealing a locked compartment.
