I supposed reading probably wasn’t an interest of hers. My fingers stopped on the spine of a black book with silver lettering stamped into the spine. Mysteries of Vampires, Werewolves and Humans, it read. I considered it for a moment before sliding it out of the shelf. Was it a journal? A scientific or historical text? I took a seat on the sofa and began to read, quickly snapping the book shut when I read the explicit words on the pages and felt the heat crawl up my face.

Behind the panel was a small space, just big enough to hide something. Inside was a single book. It didn’t look like any of the other books in the library. Its cover was dark, almost black, and made of old leather that looked like cracked bark from a tree. The corners were worn down, and it had no title. Just a symbol. A silver moon. It shimmered faintly, even though the light in the library was dim.

The book has a black leather cover and on the center of the cover, there is a glass bulging bubble that's filled with some kind of red liquid. Please don't be blood. I bend to pick up the book and stumble back a bit. It's heavy and I lug it into the room kicking the door shut with the back of my heel before moving to sit down on my bed. "Who left you at my door." I openly think as I read over the cover. Elgadah Furrucci presents. Advanced Spells and Enchantments. English translation. The words are printed in italics across the cover. I run my hand over the cover and I can feel the light layer of dust on it. My hand stops at the glass bubble and I avoid touching that part.

For a moment, he just stood there with furrowed brows, his orbs fixed on the cover. “Zombies are Real?” he read, tapping his fingers on the book. Taking a deep breath, he averted his gaze to the books seated next to them. Using his free hand, he grabbed one. “Supernatural Being.” With his lips curled, he scanned them from back-to-front cover. Immediately after, his mind drifted without prior warning. Something about the titles probed his guts. He just didn’t know what. Should he believe these zombies and supernatural beings were true? If not, how could he explain what he’d seen the night before?

I place it on the table beside me and reach for the next. ‘Vampyres or Vampires? – An encyclopaedia of fact, fiction and food sources.’ The irony of the blood red lettering and dry humour of the title make me chuckle in spite of the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end. I move to place the heavy book on top of it’s witchy companion and my fingers tingle as they brush something on the back. “What have we here?” yes, I talk to myself on occasion.

Feeling particularly nosey, I pulled one of the books down and looked it over. It had an olive green-colored cover with gold and black depictions drawn all over it. The edges of the pages were bright red and worn, so I knew it was a book that had been thumbed through frequently. I turned it over to look at the title and snickered at what I read: The Occult Truth of Lycanthropy. "The old man always did have an active imagination," I muttered under my breath, smiling as I put the book back on the shelf. I wiped dust from my hands onto my jeans and turned the attic blight off as I left the room. I could hear the sound of my parent's car driving up the pathand all thought of the book was gone as

The title etched on the cover caught my eye, sending a chill down my spine: The Lineage of the Blackhollow Coven. Curiosity and unease warred within me as I opened the book. The pages shimmered faintly, a subtle glow that hinted at the magic infused within them. It wasn’t just a history - it was alive, recording the lives of those within the Blackhollow bloodline as they unfolded. My breath hitched as my name appeared in delicate, glowing script, right above Aurora’s. The sight made my heart ache and swell simultaneously.

I was about to give up when my fingers brushed against something different. It was massive, bound in what looked like black, flayed skin, and heavy enough to make my muscles strain as I pulled it from its slot. It landed on the reading table with a heavy thud that sent a cloud of dust into the air. I wiped the grime from the cover, my breath catching in my throat. The title was embossed in faded silver script: Vampiric Death and Rebirth.

The next second, the Patchwork Monster tore the man in half. He tossed the body outside casually. Just then, a crisp, bell-like voice sounded outside. “It’s after work hours, who’s so rude as to be throwing bodies around?” A young girl with three heads and eight arms appeared at the doorway. With just one look at the shop, anger filled her voice, and her hair stood on end. “Who the hell had a death wish and smashed the Number One Must-Eat shop in the entire horror game?”

“I told you, at the Pumpkin Park on Saturday by some creepy guy in a hood!” “Who you say is dead now.” “Exactly!” “And you just thought, ‘hey, I should take a book from a dead guy’ whose body just happened to vanish right in front of you!” “Oh, well you're not the one who was being terrorised by a fucking pumpkin...!” Jake felt the book stir in his hand. He held it out and watched the symbol on the cover begin to glow. “Still think it's a prank?” Jake went on, “why does it have a pentagram symbol on it, though?”
