Jim heard her brother still grunting and some shuffling, like the boy was fighting with the dog for a little mattress.
Her bedroom had hardly room for the queen-size bed, a small table with a chair near the heater, a bookshelf stuffed with CDs, notebooks and papers, and the closet by the bed, opposite the window opening to the backyard.
She walked in the dark to turn on the nightstand lamp and sat on the bed to take off her boots. Jim stayed at the doorway, not quite sure what to do. The bedroom doors were open, he could still hear the boy moving, and that wall seemed as thick as cardboard.
