I screamed, feeling on the verge of losing my mind. Blood was dripping from my fingers, but I didn't even feel the pain as I gripped the blade. Mom didn't even glance at my injury. She nodded firmly. "Yes!"

Cassie The next morning I’m in the library returning a book I finished reading last night when I couldn’t sleep. The library is massive, two stories tall with built-in shelves that stretch all the way to the ceiling and one of those rolling ladders attached to a rail so you can reach the top shelves. There are reading chairs scattered throughout, deep leather things that look like they’ve been here for decades, and tall windows that let in streams of morning light. I’m tucking the book back into its spot on one of the lower shelves when I hear voices coming from deeper in the room, near the reading area by the fireplace.

Meredith’s POV I used to read books about people who would be sentenced to life imprisonment. I see how they are treated like animals and tortured for days without any food or water. I always felt bad for them, despite knowing their crime. I never believed that a human being should be deprived of such basic necessities of life. But it is different when you read all of this in a book and actually experience it.
