The silence stretched just long enough to make my skin prickle. “Come to the back room,” he said finally. “I’ll show you what I have.” My heart skipped. I followed him through the narrow aisles, past towering shelves that smelled of aged paper and ink. The back room was smaller, warmer, lined with glass cases and locked cabinets. He unlocked one and pulled out a slim volume. “First edition of Rebecca,” he said, handing it to me. “Signed by du Maurier.”

Being there really did change my mood. Rebecca and I wandered the shelves for hours until I had selected a few books to read. The entire time, she made jokes about the romances I selected, while I tried to convince her they were beautiful stories. As the sun began to set off in the distance, I enjoyed the cool breeze that was drifting in through the window. It was a welcome relief to have the fresh air upon my skin. I still longed for the outside, but I had gotten used to Grey's rules ..

She knocked the other two out of the park with the way she could rock her outfits and slips and bikinis. She had a new look each day, each somehow more stunn

It left her feeling horrible about herself. "Thanks for the warning, but what should I expect?" Hope against hope that Ben could circumvent the long search and reading ahead of her. It was far too old and much too sacred to abuse it. He flipped it to the back few pages and saw that it was the story of Queen Rebecca, and how she came to be. He read it slowly because it was a story that he thought that he knew, but apparently he did not know everything, and he found it so emotional for some reason. He thought maybe it was just the beautiful way that it had been written, but that wasn't really it.

The housekeeper greeted me with a smile. "Natalie! Mrs. Martinez didn't know you were coming. She will be so glad," said the housekeeper. "Thanks, I thought I'd surprise her," I said while stepping inside. It was a house of breathtaking proportions, much the same as when fixed in memory. Volume spoke in understated elegance. I always admired the manner with which Rebecca carried herself, commanding just as much as her surroundings were. I went downstairs, turned onto my familiar hall, and found Rebecca reading in the drawing room. She lifted her head, finding me standing there, and widened her eyes with surprise.
