Book Review: The Power Of Habit Novels & Stories

Jax picked both up, sat on the edge of the bed, and opened the first one without much confidence. The language felt clinical at first. He almost closed it but then he forced himself to keep going, reading a few pages about recognizing the difference between anger that protects something and anger that simply needs control. The ideas sat awkwardly in his mind, unfamiliar and a little uncomfortable. He switched to the second book. A section on competitive environments and the habit of turning every loss of status into a personal attack held his attention longer than he expected. He didn’t fully believe the suggestions yet, but he stayed with the page anyway.

I knew this was the time to get them to see me and make them wonder who I am. “First I want to commend everyone who has given their opinion. I enjoyed every bit and can say my perspective has been further enlightened.” I paused just for effect and then continued immediately. “For me, power isn’t always loud. Sometimes, it’s the quiet things like the way you hold yourself when no one believes in you. The way you rebuild when life knocks you down and expects you to stay there. Real power isn’t about controlling others, it’s about mastering yourself...” I went on and on, while the room went still.

“Just go on your own and find a book.” Vincent felt jealous that Ryan was smart enough to see he was using this chance to have her alone. ‘Slyvester is such a lucky dumbass man,’ he thought inwardly. Fortunately, Vincent and Slyvester made a plan beforehand. "I'm not the one who needs the book." Vincent took the cell phone and showed Ryan the conversation between him and Slyvester. Fucking idiot. I was sitting outside, perched on the stone bench beneath the ivy-covered archway, reading The 48 Laws of Power—my favorite book and the only thing I managed to bring with me from home. Honestly, it's the only reason I haven't lost my mind yet. That book isn't jusr philosophy; it's basically the blueprint for survival in a place like this. And it's been working. Slowly. Strategically.

His options...there pros and cons. And he had barely closed his eyes when the dawn broke, the first rays of sun infiltrating through the curtains of his private chamber, bathing the large room in a golden glory. 'It was another starting! ' But what a foul way of starting the day when the first thing you notice is your mistake of last night?

Things that were true and real and sitting just beneath the surface of the professional distance I maintained between us. I didn't say them. Not yet. "You read the negotiation book," I said instead. He looked at me. "First thing I pulled off your shelf," he said. "Why that one," I said. He considered it for a moment. "Because the title told me it was about power," he said. "And I needed to understand the kind of power that operates in a room like yours." He paused. "Not force. Not volume. The other kind." I held his gaze.

I smiled to myself and returned to the reading, already rewriting the narrative in my head, already preparing for the next meeting, the next challenge, the next door someone would try to open without knocking. Power, I had discovered, wasn't loud. It didn’t announce itself or demand space. It simply existed, steady and undeniable. And as I sat there, pen in my hand, office quiet again, I knew one thing was certain. I wasn’t going anywhere. Not today. Not tomorrow. Not ever. This was my ground now. And always.
