On first look, they seemed innocent with bright colours that it would make you think they were heartwarming romance novels. However, a look at the titles will have you giggling like a teenager. "I'm an avid reader," Sam claimed, recommending me books that would have my undies soaked. "Me too."

I picked it immediately, and started going through it. After a while, I noticed I wasn't hearing any sound from the cook. I looked around and found her wiping tears off her eyes with the hem of her apron.

I signaled the bartender for another. As I sipped my second drink, I overheard a conversation at the table nearby. It was Sam, and he was talking with a man I didn’t recognize. My ears perked up when I heard mention of a book. The name “Elera” came up, which caught my attention. According to the conversation, Sam was trying to sell the book, and the man was negotiating the price. I squinted, trying to make out more details. The book Sam had looked old and worn. It was unmistakably the one Elera had said was missing.her lost magic book.

I didn't want to have breakfast for fear of running into Darick. The door creaked as I turned the knob and entered the library. I’d heard her name before but never read any of her stuff. Mysteries and such weren’t my thing. But Raven had seen an announcement about it in the paper that morning, so here we were. Picking the best available seats in the back, we settled into silence with the rest of the small group and waited for the author to begin.

I stood in the food writing aisle and held the fermentation book and listened to the bell above the door as he left. Then I looked at the page I'd been on. Read the rest of the chapter. Bought the book. --- I did not mention the bookstore to Gavin. Not that day. Not the following week. Not because I was hiding it. Nothing had happened that required hiding. Because I didn't know how to explain the specific texture of it — the easy familiar quality of talking about books in an aisle, the sentence about remembering things I said, the coffee I had declined — without it sounding like something it wasn't.
