Shane’s voice was steady, though his hands clenched tightly. “She looked out the window when the voice said not to. The one by the window held a small, frail figure. It had only been a month, but Lilia had grown shockingly thin. Tubes ran from her body to various machines. Violet stepped closer and realized it was a history textbook—one for her senior year. Right. Lilia should’ve been in her final year of high school now, probably sitting in an assembly somewhere, not trapped in a hospital room that never saw the sun.

I narrowed my eyes and thought for a moment before replying, “It was just a coincidence, I guess.” In truth, that day was my birthday. I hadn’t been in touch with Finn for a while when he suddenly contacted me, saying he had a birthday surprise for me. Even though I didn’t believe him, as I had been fooled by him more times than I could count, I still went, pathetically hoping to see it for myself. When I was near the city hall, a loud rumbling sound suddenly thundered overhead. A helicopter scattering flower petals flew above me. Finn was sitting inside.

Its title is Persephone’s Pomegranate, a novel it based the game on. I rarely read romance novels. When I looked at the synopsis, the plot seemed promising.

Immediately, my heartbeat quickened because I recognized the book without even trying. “The Book of Life,” I whispered. Caleb nodded slowly. Josephine’s eyes widened in shock. “You actually brought it here?”
