It was a tracker. I dug deeper into the bag and found a children's storybook, ‘The Hunting Game.’ I skimmed through the pages, there no words on them only colored pictures but what I thought was a story for children was actually a morbid depiction of the game. I had to find the bird before the wolves do or they would eat its heart. There were other characters in the book like the doctor, the police, and the civilians. In total there were twenty-four of them excluding the bird, the same number we were. There were no rules written in the book only the vague riddle at the end. ‘He who has the bird has the power.’ And the warning from the voice, ‘don’t tell anyone about your role.’ My head ached

After that day, Amira left the city like a ghost fleeing the ruins of a burned house. No goodbyes. No lingering looks. Just silence. The apartment she rented was small, tucked away in a quiet neighborhood where no one asked questions. It was the opposite of everything Montez represented: modest furniture, soft light, a faint smell of lavender. She filled her days with the basics of walking to the grocery shop, buying fresh fruit, and cooking small meals she rarely finished. Sometimes she lingered at the bookstore, running her hands over the covers of baby books she wasn’t sure she had the courage to buy.

I drift off to sleep on the plane on the way back to Texas, only to awaken after having a very vivid dream or maybe I should say fantasy of Drake. I pour myself a drink and try to relax. I decided to change clothes and freshen up, just in case Drake met me at the airfield. Silly how I have to remind myself this is all just a game. I catch myself wanting him, wanting to please him, wanting to give myself to him. I have to remember that I want to hurt him, make him regret how he treated me. Lila, my wolf also reacts to Drake so strongly I constantly have to reign in. I continue to sip the burning alcohol that I am drinking, my excitement continues to grow at the thought of seeing Drake. My son asked, "Daddy, why is that lady crying?" I said, "Everyone is in a poker game. "If we win, we will smile. "If we lose, we may cry." My son nodded as if he understood. "Oh, that lady must lose..."

She went back down the secret room tracing her steps back to what she tripped on on her first arrival. When she raised the lid, she realized her guess was right. It was indeed a metal vault embedded on the floor. Curiosity outweighed fear, and she’d pressed her thumb against the scanner. Click. Inside was a small leather-bound book wrapped tightly in a black cloth. She had unwrapped it. Inside was a hardcover book with a title clearly ascribed to the front in gold ink; The Book of Life and Death. Her breath caught, “What the hell?” She muttered underneath her breath.

I bent down and pulled out a book I had once given her, the one she used to prop up the wonky table leg—The Myth of Sisyphus. On the gilded first page, there was a message. It was something I had written when I gave it to her back in high school. In the five years we lived together, I had repeated it to her countless times. "Don't walk behind me, because I might not lead. Don't walk ahead of me, because I might not follow. Walk beside me, and be my friend."

Dear Reader Thank you for reading the first chapter of the book called, Gamble With My Heart. Gamble With My Heart was originally written as an Interactive Story Game. I am in the process of adapting it into a novel form. The original version contains a great deal of dialogue to fit the platform for which it was intended. The only difference between life and a real game is… once you die, it’s over. You can’t be resurrected. If you’re lucky enough to stay alive, then move forward and continue living in this chaotic and cruel world.
