A book fell from the second-floor railing. It landed open near Bennett’s feet. The pages fluttered once. Then went still. Bennett bent carefully and looked at it. Her expression tightened. “What is it?” Rory asked. Bennett did not answer immediately. I was beginning to hate that pause. Then she held the book out. It was not a library book. It was a ledger. Old. Bound in dark leather. Every page was covered in names. Some crossed out. Some marked with dates. Some followed by coordinates.

"The day I overheard Archer, they were discussing the Blood Moon day. I think I heard something about the Demon's forest." " Demon's forest? What's that?" Axel asked. " I have read about it somewhere, but I don't remember where." Adele thought hard and then asked Trevor, " Do you have ancient books in the Library here?" " Yes. We have every book related to supernaturals," Trevor says proudly. "Let's check," Adele said and dashed in the direction of the Library while everybody else followed her. He nodded slowly and before he could say anything more, the bedroom door swung open. Erick and Jess stood at the doorway; they were both breathless, so we knew they were running. Jess held one of the thickest books I had ever seen; it was a large brown book with golden decals swirled throughout the cover. In the front of the book, in a silvery oval was a white infinity symbol I didn’t quite recognize and then written in white above the symbol read: Book of Magic. “Woah…” I breathed, staring at the book. It was real.

I press my hand to him, trying to get him to stay still. “I can help,” I murmur, fumbling with the heavy book in my lap. He pauses, eyes darting to the old book. His gaze hardens in suspicion but then softens. He recognizes what it is. I flip frantically through the brittle pages. 39… 91… 180… Focus. My fingers finally find the right page and relief washes over me when I spot the illustrations. I place the book next to me and take the bag, searching for the right leaves stuffy stuff. I do not know what. At least the book has pictures in color.

As she’s about to leave the room, someone called. “Hey, I’m leaving the hotel. My car service is waiting,” she talked to the person on the other line. “I can’t wait to see you here. We’ve so much to see and talk about,” Noah said. Cela gave her room one final look. This is the place where she leaves her old self. “We wanted to go to a specific place and it didn’t matter if the road was rough and the journey was long. My curiosity piqued as I picked it up, and I stifled a gasp when I realized what it was. It wasn’t futile, after all. I found it. That was the journal I was looking for, and I knew from the first page. I stood up immediately and flipped through the pages. The top of the journal was half burnt and had so many sentences missing from the pages, but I could still make out a few words. I didn’t stop flipping until I saw what I was searching for. My eyes widened when I saw what he’d written, and my chest tightened at the name he’d chosen.

“Hey… about what you saw earlier.” She jumped, clutching the book to her chest. “I—I didn’t see anything. I swear. I won’t tell anyone.” I smiled softly and stepped even closer, backing her gently against the shelves. “Relax. Professor Harlan and I… we have an understanding. But I saw how you looked at us. You didn’t run away because you were scared. You ran because it turned you on, didn’t it?” Her cheeks burned brighter. She shook her head quickly. “No… that’s not… I’m not—”

I look over to where Primus had been sitting not so long ago. What's this? Primus left something behind. A book? Was this the gift he meant to give me? It is a small thing, dainty. I cannot imagine someone as large as Primus ever reading this because how could he ever hold onto it without breaking it? It looks so precious, and fragile. Even as a child, I can't imagine he would have been small or careful enough to read it. Gently, as if lifting a rose from a vase, I pick up the blush pink volume, marveling at the delightful texture of its silk binding, the title embroidered in gold. While I might not know many words yet, I know enough that I can read the title of this book.
