The cowbell sounded as the front door to Selby's Downtown Books opened, letting in the chill March breeze. Selby didn't have to look up to know who had entered. It was lunchtime. It could only be one person. "I hope BLTs are okay. Do you have drinks in that broken down fridge of yours in the back?" "Diet?" He started for the back, leaving the stack of books he was putting away on the floor. "Do you have any grape left? I feel like being different."

Pearl yells at the closed door and Gwen giggles. Slowly the other women file in. I load up a bowl of potato soup that Julie brought. She even fried up some bacon to sprinkle on top and I think I've died and gone to Heaven. I tilted my head, searching for the perfect instance to use in my argument. “Gangsters, no offense, and books is like bread and something like…” I thought hard enough. “Meat?” He raised his eyebrow. “When I say bread and meat, I don’t mean as in a burger.” I slowly pushed the book back into its slot on the shelf. “Unless stacked with other ingredients as a burger, bread and meat don’t seem like a possible combination.” He looked more confused than I was. “An unlikely combination, but it doesn’t make it any bad.” I chuckled.

Brayden looked up from his computer and across the room at Meredith. “Greta, have a seat on the couch. I’m almost finished with this.” He told her and then continued to type away at something. Meredith took a moment to look at the books on the bookshelf. There were mostly business book and biographies or books inspiring greatness lining the wall. She noticed one book was displayed next to a framed photo. The photo was a woman that looked a lot like Brayden and a boy about ten years old who looked like a younger version of Brayden. She assumed it must be Brayden and his mother. The book that was displayed on a stand next to the photo was Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

“But why bother? You could have just called me instead, or better still, sent a text.” “There are reasons I left you that note at the park rather than just leave you a text message.” His eyes moved to the corner as if he was watching out for someone, then his voice lowered. “I’m being watched.
