They spent three hours in the library. Ellie in the reading room — the fourteen-degree chair, which she settled into in the way she settled into things that were right, the body finding the position without the mind directing the finding. She had brought a book: a large-format architecture monograph that Owen had given her for her birthday, the kind of book that was too expensive for a nine-year-old and exactly correct for a nine-year-old becoming the thing she was becoming. She read for forty minutes.

"And a clutch. Something simple." She nodded. She led me to the back room. She pulled out three pairs of shoes. Three clutches. I chose the simplest. Black heels. Black clutch. "Gabriel." I am momentarily distracted off my thoughts as I looked down at Elle; she was wearing a knee-length green dress that makes her eyes appear more vivid as they were before. The top of her dress cups her breast making them appear fuller and her figure is accentuated by the silver lines on the waist, doing unimaginable things down my nether regions. I was brought back to the present when I felt her pulling me inside the li
