Is it just me, or do a lot of these books use the 'outsider protagonist'? A Greek, a Roman, a foreign slave. It's a useful narrative device to explain the culture to the reader, but it sometimes keeps the mythology at arm's length, filtered through an outsider's astonishment. I'd love to read something written from the unwavering perspective of a native Egyptian priest or priestess, where the gods are simply a fact of existence, not something to be explained.
