He’d made a reservation but when we got there the table wasn’t ready and the owner said it would be twenty minutes. James looked panicked for a second, like he’d ruined everything. “I’m sorry, I should’ve—” “Twenty minutes is fine,” I said. “We can wait.” He blinked. “You’re not mad?” “Why would I be mad? We’re not in a hurry, remember?” His shoulders dropped. “Right. Right. Not in a hurry.” We ended up browsing the bookstore while we waited. He picked up a poetry book and read me a line about “women who survive themselves.” I pretended I wasn’t affected but I bought the book anyway. He pretended not to notice.

I said, grinning from teeth to teeth like a child. We walked into the library. It looked like it had been a while, since it was in use. We went through several sections which included, finance, self-improvement, ethics, business amongst all. I caught a glimpse of a book I had been wanting to read, “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. I picked it immediately, and started going through it. After a while, I noticed I wasn't hearing any sound from the cook. I looked around and found her wiping tears off her eyes with the hem of her apron.

Nothing but a couple of gently swaying trees and parked cars lined up neatly along the curb. “Come on, James,” I muttered low under my breath. My voice came out low, a little shaky. “Man up now. It’s just Noah’s mess truly rubbing off on you too. You’re totally fine.” But I truly didn’t feel fine at all. I started walking again, much faster this time. My backpack bounced against my shoulders, the weight of my heavy books harshly slapping against my back with every single step I took. The strange feeling absolutely didn’t fade. Instead, it violently grew sharper, heavier, and more intense.
