I breathed out nervously, afraid that Bert would have to go with us to Fort Eden.
“Here,” he smiled, waving me two tickets. “One for you and for your daughter. The bus is about to leave.” He took my bags and led me to the bus.
Holding my patience, I held Katie’s hand, and like her, I was quiet, following Bert and entering the bus with him. He compared the seat numbers from the tickets to the bus seats and gestured his hand, pointing to our chairs. As soon as Katie and I were seated, he gave me my bags and tousled my daughter’s hair before he turned his back on us and got off the bus.
