I needed this and I was ready to stop living in fear that Ryker would find me. As we approached the top of the mountain, the beautiful ski resort came into sight. We had booked one of the small cabins on the outside of the Aspen resort. We pulled up in front of the resort and Paxton ran in to check us in and get the keys. When he came back out we drove over to the cabins. Ours was the last one and very private. Some stairs lead down to the cabin’s front door. It was an amazing place. The construction had two rooms and both of them allowed a perfect view of the other, it had a double size bed and it was covered in dust a couple of bags on the floor…nothing of big notice with one exception: an empty bookshelf, with the exception of one book. Intrigued, i decided to take the book back to the cabin to show Nikau. When i arrived back at the cabin, i excitedly showed Nikau the book, telling him all about the strange symbols and images that i had seen. Nikau was equally intrigued by the book, but nikau said that he would be leaving to check out on the pack for a few days. He asked me not to join him as he would be travelling in his wolf form. After he left, I settled into my cozy spot by the fireplace in the cabin, I opened the old book I had checked out from the library. The title, "The Lost Village of Ravenswood", immediately caught my attention and I was eager to learn more about this mysterious place.

The fire in the hearth snapped and hissed, sending restless shadows crawling along the wooden walls of Zane’s cabin. The space around me was bare in a way that felt intentional rather than neglected. Blades of different sizes were mounted with careful precision above a long table. Bundles of dried herbs hung from the rafters, their bitter, earthy scent thick in the air. Shelves bowed under the weight of ancient books that looked as though they might crumble if handled too roughly. Nothing about this place was accidental.

Ours. Amelia stepped out first, brushing windblown strands of hair from her face. “I found it online. It looked better in pictures, but...” “It’s perfect,” I cut in gently. Her eyes flicked to mine. “Yeah?” “Yeah.” She helped me out carefully, her hands steady on my waist. I still wasn’t used to walking long distances without the chair, but I was pushing myself—because she made me want to try. Inside, the cabin smelled like cedar and dust and something vaguely cinnamon. There was a fire pit out back. A king-sized bed under a pitched wooden ceiling. A record player with vinyls stacked neatly beside it.

“Careful, girl. You stand in my home, asking for what the stars themselves can’t always grant. Show respect.” I forced a breath, the hair on my neck rising. “I— I’m sorry. I didn’t mean—” “Words mean everything.” Her voice softened again, eerily calm. “Come inside.” I followed her through the creaking doorway, every step groaning underfoot. The cabin was worse inside. Shelves lined the walls, filled with bottles of dark liquid, bundles of dried herbs, and strange little dolls made of sticks. The air smelled of ash and something sweet, like burnt sugar.

We looked at one another inquisitively before we followed her inside the quaint cabin. When my eyes adjusted to the dim firelight inside, they roved the home in wonder. There were shelves and shelves of books, glass jars of various substances covering the kitchen counters, and drying herbs hanging from the ceiling. It smelled of yarrow and chicory and I relished the instantaneous feeling of peace that settled over me. It reminded me so much of my home in the valley.

When they reached the door, Jake kicked it open, revealing a dusty interior with minimal furnishings. "We'll have to make do," he said, looking around. "We can't risk being outside in the open any longer." Maya nodded in agreement, feeling grateful to have a place to rest. But as she stepped inside, something caught her eye. A small, weathered book sat on a nearby table, its pages yellowed with age. Curious, Maya picked up the book and began to flip through it. As she read, her heart raced with excitement and disbelief. It was a journal, written by a woman who had lived in the cabin years ago.

Selima gasped, pointing through a gap in the trees. Up ahead, in the middle of a perfect circle of huge, old oak trees, sat a cabin. It wasn't exactly the ‘rustic-chic’ Airbnb I’d pictured, but it was amazing. It was made of massive, dark logs and seemed to be built right into the side of a grey stone cliff. It looked like it had been part of the mountain forever. And standing on the front porch, looking like she was the queen of the woods, was my worst nightmare …Zelly.
