The ache in my heart turns to butterflies in my belly. There’s a rickety stool outside the den with a book sitting on it, a paperback that’s gotten soaked and dried at least once, opened like a fan. A bookmark made of braided grass is tucked between the pages. He reads? What is he reading? My wolf can’t read. All she can do to satisfy my curiosity is sniff the pages. They smell like they’ve been dew-dampened and baked in the sunshine many, many times. She bumps it off the chair with her enthusiasm, and Justus rescues it from the ground.

The walk to the bookstore was shorter than she expected. Nestled between two larger buildings, its faded sign read "Willow’s Nook.” A small bell chimed as they stepped inside, and the scent of old paper and polished wood greeted them. The librarian was a small lady with a bob cut and cat eyed glasses, probably in her fifties. The space was cozy, with narrow aisles lined with overflowing shelves and dim lamps casting a warm glow. It felt like stepping into another world, one untouched by time.

Then he explained his action which had done nothing to soften the glower but had definitely added a crease between her eyebrows. She turned her head and browsed a section at the left corner of the room. She muttered silently under breath as her eyes scanned from the top shelf and glided down to the very bottom and traced the spines back up. She then took out a book from the middle row— a thick, old book with its tattered cover and yellowed pages. She skimmed through the pages until her gaze fixed on one and her eyes rapidly moved from one word to another. “I think...I think...it’s a bond withdrawal,” she murmured without glancing up. “What?” Dorian quirked an eyebrow.

When they were out of the main drinking area, where the nightclubs and bars were located, Lucas allowed himself a small, satisfied smile. Ema would be pleased. After weeks of failure, they were positive that they would receive exactly what they had been looking for. Astor followed the smell to a little, independent bookshop nestled in between a thrift store and a vegan café. Over the door was a sign that proclaimed ‘Bookmark Haven’ in finely chipped gold paint. Indeed, the bookstore was closed, and all the windows in it were blind, but Lucas was convinced the individuals were still alive in the building.

At least he knows how to treat her. Arsella looked at Axel who glanced at her book. Axel was more interested in the book she was reading than her face. Arsella stared at her book and raised her eyebrows. Just like Axel, she was also trying to guess the thoughts of the person across from her. "Do you like reading?" asked Arsella suddenly, while closing her book after putting down the bookmark, which meant she was more interested in chatting now. "I used to be called a bookworm," Axel replied while chuckling softly.

I say crossing my arms over my chest as I looked at the podiums, this must mean the person that killed Axel’s father and took the book didn’t bring it back, what a surprise. “I was thinking the same thing when I found this place, but if you look at the authors of the books, both are written by Alfred Bulkham, which means….” He says trailing off so I could come to the conclusion myself, when I did my eyes go wide as I turn to look at him again.

Everything led back to her and our kiss and I wanted to do it over and over again, and more. I fell on the bed, kicking my shoes off and picking up my favorite book. La Divina Commedia, a three-part poem about the travels through the three regions, Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. It was an immediate distraction from my tormenting thoughts and the fact Emiliana was only down the hall. Or so I thought. Soft knocks, almost inaudible, tapped on my door. Louder ones followed before the door swung open.

We leave with the book, two more pastries, and a pair of hand-stitched bookmarks made by a woman who insisted her cat is psychic. I don’t ask follow-up questions. Later, back at the inn, I wander past Cerelia and Soren’s room. I hear murmured spellwork and low humming.

The ladies all giggle and Julie stands, handing a new bookmark to each of us. "Yes. We figured we'd get you ones that suited you a little better." she says. The new one is dark blue with gold lettering that says 'Real men read dirty books'. I smile and look over at Ev who's showing Harper his excitedly. "These are great. Thank you." I say just as Bri nudges me. "Oh! Tell them your joke, love!" Harper says excitedly. Ev rolls his eyes before addressing the group.
