The case swung slightly ajar. Kael looked at the clasp on the floor. Then, at the open case, he saw a book. He picked up the book titled The Luck Bearers Vol. III, carefully opened it to the first page, and read the first line. The Luck Bearers are not mages. They are not warriors. They are not chosen by gods or blessed by divine hands. They are anomalies. Errors in the system. People around whom the laws of probability stop behaving, bending, warping, and rearranging in ways no one can predict, measure, or pull back under control.

Elaine spoke the words down into the glass; the magic seemed to hear her, and as she gave a tug, the lid lifted. The book beneath the glass peered through Elaine. The volumes’ binding was smooth leather, and the stitching was gold. Long, smooth letters were intricately painted across the front, and her hand brushed them softly. It was the most precious book in the world. Reaching down, she pulled it out and flipped to the page she desired. There it was in thick black letters, the word luck. The pages of the book were filled with names and places, a guide to every gifted being in the land. It was centuries old and was only written on by the top magistrate himself, the king’s second in command

“That casino family... they say their blood runs thick with the money that—” The older woman paled. “Don’t mention names!” Nancy ignored the scolding, lowering her eyes to the baby in her arms and smiling tenderly. As she placed her on the stretcher, the blanket opened, revealing her thin little arms. “What’s that on her arm?” Mrs. Malcom asked. “A birthmark on her shoulder—a lucky star.” Sebastian looked at the baby—so small, so helpless. She had no choice. None of them did. They were born in the wrong places, to the wrong people, and now they were here. Discarded.
