I watched him drive away again. I thought it was prudent to follow my routine to the T. Get up, have breakfast, go to college, have David tell Adeline everything—how it was supposed to be. Or rather, how Adeline wanted it to be. I would stay in her sight at all times. The moment Patronus was out of danger, all it would take was a jump from the balcony, and I would be free. Sounds easy, but I wouldn’t be here if it were that simple. The moment I stepped foot in Anderson Mansion, Adeline was waiting in the lobby with a sour, twisted expression, fuming. Killian’s prank hadn’t aged well.

Adeline answered with a small, forced smile. She rushed outside, flagged down a taxi, and left. Her destination was a large, elegant mansion. She rang the doorbell, and when the door opened — it was Grandpa Tom. Adeline bowed politely. “My dear granddaughter… you don’t usually visit this early in the morning,” Grandpa Tom said with a smile, inviting her in. “Sorry to disturb you, Grandpa… I’m looking for Jason. Did he come here last night?” Adeline asked, searching the house with her eyes.

Remember how Mila ended up,” Aunt Sadie explained after Penelope left. “Do you think Adeline’s ghost is involved?” I asked awkwardly. “I don’t believe in ghosts or resurrection. Adeline is gone, but her conspirators are still alive,” she said firmly, as if she knew exactly who was behind everything.

She was overloaded, just rushing to her car so that she could offload them. She came to do shopping, and stock her house. “It’s Prey that would be calling. Let me offload all these, and call her back” she said as she heard her phone ringing.

She hugged Delilah tightly while drawing strength from the woman’s motherly warmth. After a moment, Adeline pulled back slightly and asked hesitantly, “Ma’am, may I borrow your phone? I forgot mine somewhere and I need to make a call.” “Of course,” Delilah said, handing her the phone without hesitation. Adeline dialed a number, and soon, a familiar wrinkled yet bright face appeared on the screen. “My sweet tamarind! Did you change your number again?” Adeline managed a soft laugh, her heart lifting at the sight of the familiar face. “Poppy, I forgot my phone somewhere. I was missing you, so I called you.”

“Approved. Tell her to keep it clean.” “Yes, Your Majesty.” The line cut. I gathered the remaining reports and forced myself to read. But Adam’s voice stayed behind every line. If the guards hurt her, he warned, I’ll take the roof off the car. “You’ll wait,” I said quietly. “We don’t burn first.” He didn’t argue. He just waited. *** Adeline POV The call came while the boys’ paint trays were still open on the table. I answered without checking the screen. “Addy, Addy, listen,” my friend Clara said, her voice shaky. “Your little girl’s been taken. The Queen’s guards pulled her right out of the car.”

“I swear I’ve seen that symbol before.” Shit. “I think I picked that one out of a book.” “Hmm…” “Adaline…” Carol came over. “I’m sorry to interrupt, but I just looked at the time.” Adaline looked over at the clock. “Shit!” She jumped up. “I’m so sorry, but I got to go get my son!” Ripping her apron off, she ran out of the dive bar restataurant. Carol and I watched her get into a beaten up Toyota and drove off.
