He raised his eyebrows in a silent question, and then it clicked. Camila! To think it was Adeline…my human mate..who had flashed in my mind at the word girlfriend. On the drive home, the sun was setting, bathing the city in golden light. While waiting at a red light, I happened to glance out the window and froze. A familiar figure stood on the corner handing out flyers. It was Adeline. She had lost a lot of weight. Clothes that had once fit perfectly now hung loosely on her frame, and there was noticeably more gray in her hair. She mechanically handed flyers to passing pedestrians, most of whom walked by without even looking. After the company collapsed, she had been left with crushing debt. After hanging up, Adeline's long fingers scrolled through photos of Lizzie and Jacob. She had intended to meet Lizzie earlier in the day.
