Or maybe I’m just scared. Either way, I decide to pick up a long fallen branch to have something to defend myself. But as I pick it up, my fingers come into contact with something cold and wet. I release the branch, startled. I hold up my hand to the light and see the bright red liquid covering my fingertips. Blood. My knees suddenly go weak. I back away from the branch but I end up colliding against a tree. I whimper and stagger away from it, but splinters and shrapnel stick to my robe, because the tree is covered in scratches.

Maddox just took the time to rush to the trunk and get his hunting rifle when he followed Gian across the driveway of a local family house. The front door was wide open, the wood on the door frame was splintered. Broken up. The moment he stormed into the house behind Gian, he heard a shot from the garden, followed immediately by a second. Maddox accelerated again and only marginally noticed the many family pictures on the walls in the hallway. He ran into the kitchen and immediately wanted to storm through the open back door, but had to brake, because right in front of the door was a blood-covered woman with blond hair, right next to a dead Proles - more precisely an Iuba.

He said. “I understand.” I said nodding. We shook hands, then he turned and headed back over. Once he was out of view, I walked back over to Jane’s parents. “Are you ready to continue?” I asked. They both looked at me, and nodded. We continued through the forest, it wasn’t long till the pack-house came into view. As we got closer, I was sure to mind link my father and mother. The two already standing outside, waiting for us to return.

I didn’t think his name. We stayed there until Kade was satisfied. He sent Tern up the bank to check the old birch stand and waved Lena and Jett back in. They moved quiet and quick. We took one last sweep, turned, and started home. I almost let myself believe we would make it out clean. Then a voice came from the trees to our left. “Well,” it drawled, dry as winter bark. “Isn’t this a picture.” We pivoted. Bran stepped from the pines with two of his men. He was a Thornridge wolf with a knack for showing up when you least wanted him. He had narrow eyes, a thin smile, and the sort of loyalty that wrapped around the Alpha and squeezed too hard.

"Then that means someone close to us knew." The thought makes my skin crawl. Was there a traitor in the pack? Or has an outsider been watching us for longer than we realized? I press my fingers against my temples, trying to push through the fog in my mind. None of this makes sense. If the rogues wanted the book, why burn the pages? And why was the message carved into the tree? RUN. Was it a warning? Or a threat? Bran exhales, his frustration clear. "We're chasing shadows."

We wouldn’t be able to help it, right? We’re closing in on the same tree where he left the last two letters. I can still smell him–spice, the forest after the rain, leather… something else. Something tantalizing. I pick up my speed, leap over a fallen log, round a corner and dodge a thornbush. Squirrels scurry up the trees, and birds take to the sky. I keep running until I get to the clearing, and then I stop. Bram isn’t here. I see the white envelope in the tree in the same place it was last time, but he’s gone. I can still smell him, though. It seems like the scent is strong enough for him to be standing right in front of me.
