My heart races as I scan my surroundings, desperately searching for anything that could help me survive. Ahead, I spot a fallen branch… thick and sturdy. I turned sharply— Scar’s brother was there. I barely had time to react before he lunged. I ducked—just in time. His massive form crashed into the tree behind me, bark splintering under the impact. I gritted my teeth, gripping the branch tightly, and swung. Hard. The wood connected with his side, sending a sharp, cracking sound through the clearing.

I felt the earth answer me. I thrust my hands forward, palms open, and the air between me and the branch thickened, shimmering silver-white. The ground trembled as roots burst upward, coiling like living things. The branch slammed into the barrier with a deafening crack, splintering but it never touched the pup. I was already there. I scooped him up, turned, and the roots hardened, locking the broken branch in place as it settled harmlessly to the side. Silence crashed over the yard.

Branch after branch I climbed, until I was fully covered in the leaves of the tree. I found a thick branch connecting to the trunk of the tree, and leaned against it. The adrenaline rushing through me heightened my senses as I listened intently for the person I saw. I tried peering around the branches that engulfed me, but eventually decided it best if I stayed still. If I couldn't see them, they couldn't see me.

The branch felt heavy in my hands, a symbol of my will to survive and safeguard my family. Evan swung at me with ferocity, but I dodged, barely evading his strike. The forest became our battleground, the sounds of our struggle blending with the nocturnal symphony around us. “That’s why we’re not staying on campus or Briarwood.” Arya had left her car on a side street earlier in the day and she quickly disabled the tracker and closed the hood. Honor handed her a wet wipe and she wiped her hands before getting into the car. They sped away from the house, laughing as they got on the freeway. Honor was typing something into her phone and her eyes widened. She turned the phone to Arya and grinned. “Let’s go there!” “What is that place?” “According to this, it’s the hottest bar in Reading,” Honor said.
