One by one, they began to crack. “Maxim!” Zara’s voice this time, sharp with fear. She reached him, clutching his shoulders, but he hardly felt human enough to recognize her touch. The oath pulsed once more, searing him from the inside out. He roared, fighting to hold it, to keep the chains intact. The ground quaked beneath him, stone splitting, ash whirling in a cyclone of power. The warband fell to their knees, whether in fear or reverence he couldn’t tell. The Beast fed on it all.

I admitted. “Well, let me tell you. They are metal rods that are bent and then soldered together.” She took a sip of her drink before continuing. “The weakest part of a chain link is where it is soldered, because it was never meant to be connected to itself.” She patted my arm. “The hardest part of breaking the chains that hold you back is finding what holds it together.” She gathered her trash and picked up her cup before getting out of my car. She bent down to meet my eyes. “When you are ready to break your chain, you know where to find me. The happiness you are searching for is within reach. A loud roar erupted from my throat as black chains burst forth from the runes, aglow with red embers. I swung the chains forward and they coiled like snakes, impaling the first two men through the chest. I yanked both chains back, and their bodies were lashed across the cathedral, crashing into pillars with a wet crunch. The others screamed, keeping on with their charge. I spun around, thrusting one hand to the left and a cascade of chains burst forth from my hand, whipping across the air. One of the men raised his shield to block them, but the chains seared through it like butter and wrapped themselves around his neck. I pulled forward and his head flew off.

"I'm not against it. Through it. The universe exploded with loudness before I could enquire what he meant. In the distance, chains clattered sharply and loudly, like metal thunder. The presence I had assumed was gone forever vanished as the air turned blue. The Chainbearer. His eyes blazed with that old, merciless calm as he emerged from the haze. With my wrists turned away from each other, I waited until the metal was hot enough to burn my flesh without harming me. With very little force, I pushed my wrists apart, causing the chains to break. Without taking my eyes off the group of people in front of me, I bent over to break the chains around my ankles. One of the teens tried to run as I stood up, but I threw out a lightning bolt, blocking their path. “Not so fast.” I sighed. “What are you going to do?” Ultimate fear broke through Freckles’ voice. “That depends. Are you going to tell me who you are working for?” I lifted my brows and slowly glided toward him.

The chains were too strong. I felt frustrated and angry at the same time. The chains were making me angry by not coming off. I wondered why my strength wasn't coming back to me. I needed them now but they were showing up. I had tried many times before, but it never worked. I had the desire to break free of the chains. I felt something, a spark. I felt it rising. My body began to build up, my muscles began to grow stronger. I felt my wolf strength emerge, I broke the chains off.
