Just empty heaving that left me gasping. I grabbed makeup remover and cleaned my face with mechanical precision, each swipe of the cotton pad erasing evidence of my breakdown. Then I started over. Foundation. Concealer. Powder. Building the mask back up layer by layer until the broken girl disappeared beneath it. I chose a dress from the closet—a simple cotton sundress with a modest neckline that covered the bruise completely. Pulled my hair back. Slipped on sandals.
