My head tipped back against the pillows, eyes still blindfolded, lips parting in shock. My breath caught. It was dizzying and terrifying. I whimpered, and he eased the pressure immediately, just enough for me to suck in a breath. And God, that breath felt like a gift. “Again,” he whispered. He watched me. I knew he was watching. The pressure came again. My lungs held tight, too tight. I felt my thighs tremble in the restraints. Tears prickled at the edge of my lashes beneath the blindfold. My lips parted. I tried to breathe shallowly through my nose. It worked until it didn’t. Until all I could think about was the nothingness.

I waited until it was close to midnight—I had three minutes to go. I started thinking back on my life, but it was too simple and plain. There didn't seem to be much to remember. My life had been a tragedy from the moment I was born. The minutes turned to seconds, and I slumped onto the table. I had my urn and photo beside me. Five, four, three, two, one… The countdown ended, and a dead silence descended upon me. The room went silent—even the sound of my breathing disappeared. At the same time, I heard the sound of the doorknob turning. Someone was back!

Dominic stood in his bathroom, and shaved before getting dressed in another black suit. He’d sat vigil the whole night, remembering odd things about Conrad. They were mostly horrific memories but there were a few good ones, mostly after Hunter and Gage were born and then also Inara. Mist had descended over the countryside. There was no wind, and the mist hung like a bad omen. Dominic’s SUV drove behind the hearse towards the city and the church where the funeral mass would be held.
