The first blush of dawn spread across the horizon as New York stirred from its slumber. The towering skyscrapers and bustling streets slowly awoke under the soft touch of morning light. From Ethan’s office, perched high atop a prestigious skyscraper, the sunrise over the city was a mesmerizing spectacle. The eastern sky, once painted in deep shades of indigo and violet, began to brighten as the daybreak drew nearer. Clouds caught the early light, their fringes glowing pink and gold. Below, the city remained in shadow, awaiting the dawn’s magic.

The field erupted in color: red, green, violet, blue — each hue representing a distinct mind, a distinct voice. Together, they didn’t blend perfectly. A large mirror appeared in front of me. I was pinned in a hidden corner behind it. The sounds started quickly. Two figures tumbled onto the bed. Serena tore open Ethan's white shirt. "Come on, let me see if you still have those abs. I've been dying for this." Ethan glanced at me through the mirror, then turned back to Serena. "You know I'm not Caleb. You never give me much time. Two days from now you won't be mine anymore. So tonight, can we pretend this is our wedding night?"

Evrah was almost there. The dark blue fading into light blue to white. So much white, almost burning. She kept going. It was so close she could feel it. It got brighter still, too bright. She pushed forward, just a little left. She burst through the brightness of white until she collided with every color of the rainbow into an explosion of light and dark until it was gone. Evrah opened her eyes and glanced around. Above her hung the majestic mix of blues and white, cascading downward into darker hues of greens and browns, slowly fading into the softer colors she laid upon. She blinked a few moments taking in the feel of her skin upon her bones and the twitching muscles surrounding them.

I know this, yet the idea that I'd been used still hurt more than I could have expected. I push the thoughts away and look out at the lagoon. Dawn is creeping across the water on the waves. The world is still painted in dark blues and grays, matching my current mood. Soon though, the sun will come up over the island and turn the water into the brilliant Caribbean blue that I love. Perhaps with the dawn, I, too, will feel brighter.
