I dragged the heavy table back in front of it. Kaelen lay on the rug in front of the dying fire. He was shivering violently. The adrenaline was fading and the shock was setting in. I put the baby in the crib. I didn't look at his eyes. I couldn't. Not right now. I ran to the kitchen. I grabbed the whiskey. I grabbed a knife. I grabbed towels. I knelt beside Kaelen. "I have to take the arrows out," I said. He nodded weakly. I cut his shirt open. The arrows were barbed. Hunting arrows.

I was watching the twitch of her fingers. The second I saw those middle digits move, I launched myself to the left - the firing line. I saw her try to adjust, but a bow is not a gun. Once that arrow starts out, it has its own motivations. The arrow would have punched through my right shoulder and penetrated into my chest cavity. I wouldn't be dead, only fatally wounded. Instead it passed under my chest and outstretched arm and leg as I was in mid-roll. Next time I knew I wouldn't be so lucky.

I owe a lot of what I now know to those books. I pause for a second, hearing rustling a few metres to my right. Taking a crouching position, I slowly move towards the sound. Behind a bush are two huge rabbits, I could’ve sworn they were hares if not for their tiny ears. I fix an arrow on the bow and aim ahead. The arrow whizzes through the air and brushes past the first rabbit but stabs the second one through its side. The first one is bleeding out and tries hopping away but it’s already getting weak from losing blood so it doesn’t get far.

I just hadn’t expected to live one. “Keep paddling!” Daemon barked. His claws extended now long and gleaming, catching firelight as he swatted arrows from the air with deadly precision. Any that came too close to me, he knocked aside without even looking like it strained him. But they weren’t slowing down. More arrows. Dozens turned to hundreds. The sky looked like it was bleeding fire. I screamed as one arrow skimmed past my shoulder, catching the edge of my dress. I patted it out, my heart hammering so fast I could barely think.

Each arrow flew from her bow, her aim deadly. Finally, one arrow found its mark, sinking deep into the creature’s flesh. It howled in rage, staggering, and Violet decided to take the advantage of its, firing volley after volley. Her arrows pierced its limbs and chest, and with a final, ear-splitting roar, the creature collapsed, shaking the earth as it fell.

My arm felt like it was rotting, the veins pulsing with fire. She tried to hold me up, her small hands pushing against my chest, but I shook her off. “Run.” “No….” “Run, Audrey.” I shoved her back toward them, Caleb and Adrian both catching her at the same time. She looked between us, torn apart, but before she could argue, the first arrow shattered through the broken window. It buried itself in the gym floor, green smoke hissing up from the tip. It was a Wolfsbane. “Down!” Caleb barked, dragging Audrey against him as more arrows whistled through the air.

Heat crawled up my neck. Emotionally bonded? I slammed the book shut hard enough to send dust exploding into the air. I sat there breathing heavily for several seconds before slowly reopening the book again. Just to confirm that I had read it correctly. Unfortunately, the next page was worse. There was a diagram labelled 'Optimal Breeding Angles for Large Wolf Hybrids'. I stared at it in utter disbelief. There were arrows. Why were there arrows?! I snapped the book shut again. What the fuck? My whole body felt overheated now.

I close one of my eyes and took a deep breath. I gladly let go of the arrow and smiled as it blossom on the guy's chest. He momentarily stopped his car and got out, only then did I see that the arrow was halfway buried on his chest. He hopelessly look around until his eyes landed on a blonde girl, shielding herself from the rain with a book held tight, positioning it on top of her head.
