I walk through the front door and follow the sound of her sobs until I find her room. Her back is to me and she wears a tank top, my heart breaks as I can see finger print bruises on her shoulders. I say her name softly, "Cara?" She turns to me, tears still falling down her face. She is clutching her heart and says, "I feel like my heart has been ripped from my chest. Do you know what's going on?" I nod slowly and she begs, "What is it? How can we make it stop?" I blink, surprised that she hasn't been able to figure it out and I say, "We can't make it stop... it's your mate bond breaking." She blinks, looking completely lost and confused and I elaborate, "Your mate bond is broken because...

He nearly smiled. I looked at Lorenzo. He let out a breath. Then I looked at Sera and thought about the way my mother trusted her, about how two truths can live in the same place, about an Anchor holding things together that want to break apart. I remembered this woman spent eight years trying to right something she’d helped start and was still choosing the hardest thing, again. “Start with the bond,” I said. “Tell Ren it’s fractured. Killian and Lorenzo are struggling to find their balance. I’ve been isolating. Make it specific—Ren will push for details. Give her details that sound real because they’re based on something that is.”

“That doesn’t sound like normal dreams.” “No.” “Did Zira say why it’s happening?” I shook my head slowly. “The bond.” The sacred connection between Alpha and Luna had been severed when I fled Silvercrest. But severed did not always mean erased. Sometimes, bonds leave echoes behind. Fragments of something that refused to disappear completely. And those fragments could haunt the mind. “Zira thinks the bond breaking damaged something in him,” I continued quietly. Aisha studied my face carefully. “And what do you think?” I hesitated.

For a fraction of a second, something like relief tried to surface. But Capsin continued before it could settle. “It is not broken.” The relief faded immediately. Theo’s voice dropped.

“Because the same pattern is repeating.” Elena’s breath caught. Damien stilled. And Zephyr’s shadows sharpened instantly.“What pattern?” Elena asked.The priestess looked directly at her again.“The bonds are breaking again,” she said. A pause. “And this time… the cost will not be emotional only.” The air in the camp shifted. Cold. Heavy.Predatory. Elena felt it immediately.The faint bond inside her chest flickered again.Not fading this time.Not weakening.But splitting. Her eyes widened slightly.“No…” she whispered.

(Damon’s POV) The bond broke like a neck. One second it was there, wounded, bleeding, but there. A tether between my chest and hers. A pulse I’d learned to live with, even when it hurt. Even when it screamed. The next second, Nothing. I felt it happen. Felt the exact moment her words became reality. The bond didn’t fade or fray or loosen its grip. It snapped. Like a rope pulled too tight. Like a branch bent too far.

When one of them would have to decide whether to hold the bond together… or break it to save the rest. And the most terrifying part was that she had no idea who would break first. Or if it would be her. The jet continued its steady flight into the endless dark, carrying five connected souls that were no longer perfectly aligned, and a woman who now knew exactly how to tear them apart without ever touching them again. But as the cabin lights dimmed, Jenna felt something shift deep inside the bond, something fragile and new. A single, unmistakable crack and this time, it didn’t come from Vesper.

Roger hesitates now, glancing down at Dominic. Dominic looks up at his brother, clearly inviting any insight. “Look, I did a lot of research on mating bonds back when we were young and Dominic and Lydia’s formed theirs,” Roger says, glancing at each of his listeners in turn. He sighs. “We don’t need to go into the reasons why – I was devastated.” Each of the listeners nods, remembering that Roger and Lydia had been engaged when Dominic turned sixteen and his bond with Lydia snapped into place. “But I do remember,” Roger continues, “reading about rare cases in which bonds weren’t fully broken but instead…bruised? Or drawn quite thin? Shredded and damaged but…intact.”
