I moved fast towards them with one in the tow behind me as we both picked up the two injured and dragged them back into the safety. I saw a guy dragging out a knife behind my team members back as he was about to stab him. Wasting no time, I pulled my rifle and shoot him down. The bullets were flying all around us and slowly but surely we held our ground. But the problems started sometime later. Seems as there were more and more men coming as they shoot back at us, making us trapped. Thankfully we all were soldiers, trained for all kinds of situations, but what they never train you is how not to feel betrayal.

We just lay there two people who had hurt and bled and survived. Two soldiers. One fire. And a future. Burning between us.

He parked his car and approached her. Leon slowed down when he got closer to Selena, noticing that she was tending to a wound on her leg. He could hear her voice asking if she was hurt. Selena looked up upon hearing his voice, and Leon knelt before her, assessing the injuries on her knee and observing a few scars that had already healed. It was the first time he had seen Selena's legs up close, and Leon found them captivating, despite the numerous wounds he saw. As he gazed at her legs, Selena shifted uncomfortably.

I walked the length of the room, taking in every bed, every name scratched in haste on the boards, every face twisted in pain or dulled by fever. Then I stopped in front of a soldier who hadn’t spoken since the attack. His leg was gone from the knee down, the bandages soaked through with blood that wouldn't stop. The healers had tried everything. I could smell the bitterness of the burned sage. I could see the charmstone tucked beneath his cot, already cracked. “Move him,” I said gently, nodding to the far wall. “Somewhere quieter.” The other healer looked up at me with uncertainty, but she obeyed. I followed them to a side chamber and pulled the curtain closed behind us. Then I knelt.

I am happy to be a single dad. I am happy to be single for the rest of my goddamn life, for I have the only thing that matters anything in the world. Braydon. I will always be a broken soldier. But today, I become mended.

The morning sun filtered weakly through the infirmary’s shutters, casting golden slants across the room. Warriors stirred on their cots, groaning but no longer on the verge of death. The air was lighter than the night before, though disbelief clung to every corner. One of the young soldiers sat up, his hand pressed to the place where his ribs had been broken clean through. His eyes darted around in confusion. “I… I shouldn’t be alive.” Another warrior, older, lifted his shirt to reveal smooth skin where wolfbane’s black rot had been eating him alive hours earlier. His voice trembled. “She touched me. And the pain—gone, just gone.”

"Understood, boss. We'll handle it." I leaned against the balcony railing, my eyes fixed on the bustling activity below and contemplating my next move. Another one of my men entered the room, dragging a figure behind him. The man, bloodied and bruised, looked like a broken shell of his former self, his face swollen and contorted in pain. I studied him with a mixture of disdain and curiosity, noting the cuts and bruises that marred his once-smooth skin. This was a man who had seen better days, a man who had crossed the wrong person and paid the ultimate price for his folly.

The woman’s voice trailed off as she and the doctor walked away from the area near my door. I looked around the room, it was plain. No flowers or get-well cards. Not that I expected any, but I wondered how long I had been out of it. I pulled the cover back to see my clothes. I was still wearing my shorts and tank top. But my boots had been removed and there were a few bandages on my legs and arms. Seconds later the guy who was just speaking to the doctor entered my room. He walked over to a chair that sat against the far corner, but he didn’t sit down. I watched as he just stood there staring out the window for a few minutes.

It suddenly felt like my chest was full of fluid and I was gasping for air. Why did I feel so strongly about Adam right now? A man that had bullied me in high school. A few weeks ago, I was hoping that he had died on the ice, and now I was here begging for his life to be saved. I pushed myself off the wall because I desperately needed to move but my legs felt strangely weak beneath me. “Eli.” I raised my head to see Doctor Broome watching me. “Are you okay?” I inhaled deeply and stuttered a response. “Yes, I am.”

I sensed Victor come up behind me and wrap his hands around my waist. “Beta Victor..” Ryder and Jeremy bowed in greeting and Victor nodded. “Ryder, it’s good to see you up and about. I hear you’re almost back to where you were before….” Victor trailed as Ryder smiled and nodded. “Yes, sir! Almost as good as new! Thank you, Tori.” He looked at me again and I could hear the sincerity in his voice. Victor smiled at me. “A warrior’s vow is for life, Tori. Unbreakable. A broken vow means death for the warrior. Not to be taken lightly.” I smiled through the tears.
