HIS BROKEN PLAYTHING
A sharp snap cut through the silence.
Her heel had broken.
She lurched to the side, barely catching herself against a lamppost. Gripping the metal like it was the only thing keeping her upright, She stood there for a moment, her breathing uneven. Then, slowly, she looked down at her broken heel. Then at the other one.
A dry, humorless laugh slipped past her lips. The kind of laugh that sounded more like defeat than amusement. Without hesitation, she reached down, yanked both shoes off, and tossed them straight into the nearest trash can.
