The crown caught fire right in front of my eyes. “Why fire?!” I gasped loudly. It was not the usual flame—but a strange, silken one, golden and blue, rising without burning the air. It twisted around the crown like it was testing whoever dared to claim it. My pulse quickened and Phina shouted in my mind, “If that fire consumed the crown, the entire trial would be meaningless!” I had to get it. I lunged forward lightning-fast, every muscle in my body pushing me toward it. At the same time the Eagle ran for it. Just as I was a few meters away from the crown, the heat seared my face, licking my skin, but I didn’t care. I reached out—

The ground split again, wider this time. Flames roared upward, twisting into jagged shapes, forming what looked like a throne from molten stone. Kael dragged himself forward, his body broken but his eyes burning with recognition. His voice rasped through blood. “I know that power…” His lips curved into a bitter smile. “The crown doesn’t wear mortals. It devours them. I said, and turned to go. "Why so formal today?" he asked, glancing back at me. "Because I wanted to make you feel like a king today," I said, cracking a smile. "King indeed!" he replied, smiling faintly. I laughed quietly and went out to wait for him. Prince Pavan POV I dressed quickly and joined Demille outside. I handed him a small decorated box of herbal remedies for stomach pain, and we set off toward Queen Camille's chamber. On the way, I caught sight of the ministers filing toward the courtroom.

“I know.” “You can tell me to stop.” Jamie looked at him. Really looked. The scar. The control. The restraint that felt like it was holding something dangerous in check. “I don’t want you to stop,” Jamie said, then winced. “I mean….” Adrian didn’t smile. He didn’t gloat.
