Charlotte faced the glowing heart ahead of her, only a little farther, but the path was harder, and it became more difficult to move with every step. "I love you, Rurik. Do you hear me? I love you!" She shouted the words into the blinding snow that tried to hide the heart from her. But she would not stopshe would never stop. She stretched her hand into the flames, curling her fingers around what looked like a giant ruby. Fire exploded around her, burning her hand, her body, her soul. It was killing her, she knew it. The cold winter wind rushed through the broken window of the abandoned house. The girl in the shadows shivered, backing further away from the shattered glass. She looked over her shoulder for the millionth time, feeling paranoid. He could be anywhere — lurking in a dark corner, waiting behind a closed door, silently standing behind her — and she wouldn't even know it. He was too quiet. Too good at this horrible game.

I stretch my hand out to him. “What for?” “In case you don’t return it on the date you wrote in the permission booklet, I’ll toss your card away and you’ll never step back in again.” He mumbles ‘bitch’ under his breath, dips his hand into his pocket and pulls out his card and hands it to me. I beam at him, and he rolls his eyes before leaving. I pray he doesn’t return it, so I can happily toss this into the toilet and flush. I sit down and pick up the novel ‘When star burns by Ninya Tippett’ on my desk, continuing from where I stopped before I got interrupted. Books such as these make me believe in love and that everyone would find it at the right time.

Then the poetry. Handwritten. Sometimes sonnets. Sometimes messy, jagged pieces that felt like they’d been ripped straight from his chest. One read: If I could be the rain that slips down your shoulder, If I could be the sky you look up at in rage I’d let you strike me down, again and again, If only to stay close to your fire. I threw that one in the trash. Three hours later, it was tucked inside the cash register. And then came the books. First editions. Stories I’d loved. Stories I’d once read aloud to Damien in the Blackwood library when we were young and tangled in something that felt like forever.
