His expression tightened, his jaw clenching slightly as if he were bracing himself.
He finally spoke, his voice measured. “It’s been a year since you found out the truth. Why ask now?”
The question caught me off guard. I stopped, too, my pants still in my hand, and looked at him. How could I explain the strange pull this question had over me? How could I articulate the shift I had felt inside, the way my perspective was changing?
“Until now,” I began, the words coming slowly as I tried to piece together my feelings, “I was afraid to look at my future. Without a future, the past didn’t seem so important. But now… everything feels different. I’m different.”
