The clearing went still after I asked. Kaelor didn’t interrupt. His attention moved between us, calm and unreadable, as though he were assessing the distance between us instead of the conversation.
Darek didn’t react. “If you did, you’d remember.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“No,” he said calmly. “It isn’t.”
Lucien’s name wasn’t spoken again, but it stayed there anyway. It had been there since Darek walked into the clearing, threading through everything that followed.
