Inside, the place smelled like sugar and coffee beans, a quiet hum of music drifting from an old speaker.
We found a table by the window. I kept the conversation feather-light, asking about her favorite drinks, joking about the café’s crooked chalkboard sign. She didn’t give me much, but every now and then I caught her fighting another smile, like she couldn’t quite help it.
