“Coffee, tea, hot chocolate. Anything of your choice. We don’t even have to talk if you don’t want to. Just… neutral ground.”
Her lips pressed together, like she wanted to argue but couldn’t find the hook. “That’s not in the contract.”
I gave her a lopsided grin. “Clause six: spontaneous caffeine diplomacy. It was in the fine print.”
For a breath she tried to keep a straight face, then a small, startled smile tugged at the corner of her mouth before she looked away.
Gotcha.
I didn’t comment on it any further. I just opened the café door and let the warm air roll out to meet us. Inside, the place smelled like sugar and coffee beans, a quiet hum of music drifting from an old speaker.
