The ground beneath me is cold and hard. It takes me a moment to realize I can't fully extend my legs. My eyes snap open. Metal bars. Concrete floor. A cage barely four feet high and five feet wide. I'm in a cage. Panic hits like ice water. I lurch upright and slam my head against the low ceiling. Stars explode across my vision. "Don't do that." The voice comes from nearby. Female, tired. "You'll just hurt yourself." I blink through the pain. I'm in a warehouse, massive, industrial, with rows and rows of cages lining the walls. Each one holds someone. Wolves, mostly, but I catch the scent of humans too. Maybe thirty of us total.

I focused on the sound of his lungs—the same lungs that had breathed life into me in the safehouse, the same man who was currently my only anchor in a world turned to ash. We finally emerged into the bowels of the New York Public Library—the Milstein Research Stacks. In the daytime, this place was a sanctuary of knowledge. In the blackout, it was a haunted forest. The flashlight in Cassian’s hand was shielded by a red filter, casting a bloody, rhythmic pulse over the endless rows of shelving. Millions of books sat in the dark, their spines like ribs, their contents a silent witness to a history that was being unwritten in real-time.

she mumbled under her breath. But as she stepped into the library, her stomach twisted. The feeling of being watched returned except this time, it wasn’t Ryker Emma wandered through the bookshelves, trying to focus on finding the reference material she needed, but the oppressive silence of the library felt wrong. It wasn’t peaceful, it was suffocating. Then she heard it. A voice, so close, it made her breath hitch. "You don’t belong in his world, little human." She spun around, heart hammering in her chest. A man stood just a few feet away, half-hidden in the dim lighting between the shelves.

Or I will visit your children and tell them who their real father is.” she gulps and nods her head. Do I feel bad? Slightly, but not overly. We walk the way she pointed and come to a cage with books locked behind it. I push the little metal handle down and walk inside. These books are old and look like they will crumble if touched. “Any idea what is it we are looking for? Colour, size?” I ask them when they both shrug. Ok helpful, not! We search for hours looking at each book, but nothing.

She had never even ever wished me a happy birthday. Last year on my birthday, I begged her to give me a birthday gift. That time, Zac was saying that he had a headache. She was frustrated when she bought me that fake gold ring. When she recalled that, she wondered if she had been too cruel, so she hid in a corridor and called the hospital. “Is Theo there with his mother? Can you please get him to answer this call?” She did not expect a huge commotion over the phone. Immediately after, the nurse yelled, “Ms. Anderson, I can’t really hear you. There’s a huge fire at the hospital. It’s a huge mess now!”

The book remained silent, twisting its lips like a female putting on a gloss, “Well, I'm Cwena Engow, and this is Gerey -” “Spare me the details,” the book screamed loudly at her, “I know who you both are better than you both know yourself,” “Shhh, you're going to attract my mother's attention if you continue speaking with such volume. And how did you know us?” “Don't you dare lay as much as a finger on me,” with a scared tone, the book told Gerey who'd wanted to lift it unto his lap, “Unless - you want to burn me.”

It is dark, and it smells as we go down the stairs. The young wolf turns on a small light. It barely illuminates the basement. He takes my handcuffs off and pushes me into a large metal cage. There is a small mat to sleep on, a sink, and a toilet. Alpha Raymond has done this before. The mat is bloody and smells, but I have no choice but to lay on it. "Get comfortable, little wolf. You will never see the light of day again," The young wolf says as he leaves me alone in the cage.

Just expensive furniture and abstract art that looked chosen to impress rather than express. I passed through the living room, my attention drawn to a large bookshelf covering one wall. The collection impressed me—ancient texts on pack history, rare volumes on wolf magic, modern novels organized by genre rather than author. Many of the books looked unread, their spines uncreased. One leather-bound book caught my eye—its dark cover embossed with strange symbols that resembled no language I recognized. I reached for it, but it refused to budge. Odd. I tried again, pulling harder. The book remained firmly in place, as if glued to the shelf.
