Blackwater Val
the two peach-faced lovebirds, dead inside their wire cage, reanimated abruptly and both began floundering beside her on the porch.
Sydney leapt straight up, aghast, tearing the Marilyn Monroe beach towel away from the canary cage with a desperate cry. The blood-flecked birds screeched and flopped, wings beating wildly, their breasts heaving. She gaped walleyed at them through a blizzard of feathers, the lit cigarette tumbling from her lips. Syd made a retching sound and her foot bumped the cage, sending it end over end down the back stairs and into the yard, where the little wire door came unlatched, and off flew the two hysterical lovebirds, up and away and into the trees above.
