[Fallon’s POV] Panic begins to claw at me as I pull at the door that is keeping me in and everyone else out. From beyond, I can hear Cyrus’ footsteps growing further and further, until I’m sure that he’s truly just going to leave me locked away. "CYRUS!" I scream, slamming my hands against the door. "LET ME OUT!" I’m not sure exactly what is going on, but with each passing minute that I’m trapped in my room, my fear grows more and more.

The cage is closing. And this time, there’s no way out.

Elowen snapped. “I solve it by keeping you alive,” Corvin said. Elowen stepped closer, heat rising in his chest. “Alive where? In your rooms? In your sight? Or under your command?” Corvin’s jaw tightened. “Under my protection.” Elowen shook his head. “You dress it in softer words, but it is still a cage.” Corvin’s gaze did not waver. “A cage keeps predators out.” “And traps animals inside,” Elowen shot back.

The next day, Irene chose a good time to bring Zac to the cemetery to proceed with the move. When I arrived, everyone was looking at me. “Not only is he not able to celebrate his birthday, but he can’t even protect his father’s grave. What an embarrassment of a man!” “Zac is very close with Ms. Anderson in the office. She would give him whatever he wants. I would remain physically his wife and stay inside this cage he built and locked me inside… but spiritually, emotionally, and mentally I would be completely free, independent, and forever beyond his reach and control. "What's the Cage?" "Supernatural prison. Official name's something else but everyone calls it the Cage. It's in North London, underground. Run by vampires." The older wolf sits across from me. "The cells are lined with silver. Bars, walls, floors. Everywhere you touch burns. You can't shift. Can't access your full strength. You're just stuck there in constant pain."

Not when Alpha Cain and Jade took all his time discussing pack issues. Next to the line of birds, I noticed a cage missing. Another part of what we were, had. It was gone. Our golden canary. We found it together while I was working in the fields. Its leg was broken, and I remembered how we patched its wound up together like a team. Each time I thought about us, I was in pain. Aaron had successfully taken a piece of my heart. It was locked with him. I wish I had stayed away when I wanted to.

I stop dead in my tracks, my breath catching in my throat. Cages. Row upon row of them, stacked up to the heavens like forgotten shipping containers in a rusted junkyard. But these weren’t empty crates filled with useless debris. These cages held shifters; wolves, felines, and others whose scents I couldn’t immediately place. All of them crammed into spaces so small they could barely move, let alone shift.
