Jinx stood to the side, her eyes darting between Jayce Sherwood and Lalisa, her expression filled with hatred. She sat directly next to Lalisa, blocking Jayce Sherwood’s line of sight and placing her mobile phone, which had a cute rabbit earphone case, on the tea tray. She looked at Lalisa with a threatening tone. “If you want to talk about whatever it is, just say it and leave.” Since Jayce Sherwood lost his memory several years ago, whenever Lalisa came to find him, Jinx would immediately go on high alert. Lalisa’s gaze fell on the mobile phone with a rabbit earphone case on the tea tray. She bit her lip, trying to think of a way to plant a virus in the mobile phone.

I stepped entirely inside his guard, grabbed the lapels of his pristine white silk suit, and drove my forehead directly into the bridge of his nose. Bone crunched. Kaelen cried out, dropping the plasma blade as blood poured down his face. I swept his legs out from under him, sending him crashing hard onto the marble. I grabbed him by the collar and began dragging his limp weight back toward the central transit hub. "Jinx! Do it!" I screamed. "I need ten seconds!" Jinx yelled back. She was entirely exposed, standing at the control pedestal on the metal platform, frantically ripping wires out of the console and splicing them together with her bare hands.

"I know, I know. Don't worry about it." Grandma sighed. I heard my cousin, Katie Woods, ask Siena, "Hey, Siena, is that jinx from your family not coming?" "No, she's not coming. My family has been unlucky lately. She's staying in the old house, hiding away." Katie seemed relieved. "Good. I don't want to be anywhere near her. It's the New Year. Don't need to catch any bad luck." My lips curled up in a humorless smile as my heart sank into a cold void.

His god powers were unreliable and too new for him to really understand what he was capable of. So Jinx did what he did best. He launched himself into the fight, tapping into his military training and his Tarot spellcasting to start destroying the automa-toms before they could break through the barrier. He was a lousy god, but he had an eternity to fix that. Jinx needed to worry about what was happening right now, in this moment. All of his loved ones were in that building. There were newborn kits inside. He couldn't falter now, not when they were all counting on him. So where the fuck was Agent? Why was he only able to get a sense of his aura but not find the little fucker himself?

"At 3:30 in the morning. Right." She grabbed her backpack. She shoved the SSD into her bra, next to her heart. She grabbed her heavy soldering iron—it was heavy enough to be a weapon. She ran to the window. She was on the fourth floor. She threw the window open and looked down. The rain was torrential. There was a fire escape, but it was rusted, detached from the wall, and ended ten feet above the concrete alleyway. In the game, Jinx had the "Cat-Fall" perk. She could leap from rooftops and land silently. She had +50 Agility.
